While much of the material on ancient Egyptian ritual is overdone, the often brilliant dialogue and the fateful interactions between the principal characters make the book quite unforgettable in comparison to Haggard's better known but more conventional adventure novels. All of the characters are mixtures of good and evil, and evoke both sympathy and loathing. Haggard's portrait of Cleopatra is quite stunning, revealing her wit, her treachery, and her overwhelming presence. The story, told from the point of view of the Egyptian priest Harmachis, is recounted in biblical language, being in the form of papyrus scrolls found in a tomb. The main character Harmachis (the living descendant of the pharaoh's bloodline) is charged by the Priesthood to overthrow the supposed impostor Cleopatra, drive out the Greeks and Romans and restore Egypt to its golden era.As is the case with the majority of Haggard's works, the story draws heavily upon adventure and concepts. Cleopatra: Being an Account of the Fall and Vengeance of Harmachis is a novel written by the author H. Nuanced with unsentimental empathy, Deer Season delivers a literary mystery that will leave readers thinking about these characters and their story long after turning the last page. “Flanagan takes clear-eyed aim at the foibles and strengths of the human heart, ultimately plumbing its tenderness through characters whose lives in Middle America are deftly rendered through a riveting plot. That it’s compelling, fun, and highly readable is simply the cherry on top.”-Xhenet Aliu, author of Domesticated Wild Things, and Other Stories She also does it with grace and humor, and without fetishizing or parodying her Nebraskan characters. This is fiction at its finest.”-Melissa Fraterrigo, author of Glory Days This book does not just return us to a forgotten place and time it recreates it for us. “With incisive prose and finely wrought tension, Deer Season is an absorbing tale of a small town that is both severed and knitted together by tragedy. "This is a standout novel of small-town life, powered by the characters' consequential determination to protect their loved ones at any cost."- Publishers Weekly, starred review Lighter Than My Shadow is not an easy book to read. The most harrowing illustrations are those of a close-up of Katie in the throes of a difficult moment, the black scribbles closing in on her. It makes her mental illness a real, physical character in the story as much as Katie and her family are. If you look close enough, you can pick out words: mean names and feelings that her illness would call her. Katie’s negative thoughts are portrayed by dark, dense clouds of scribbles. Each and every illustration was drawn by hand, in what looks to be ink. Though she’s admitted to therapy multiple times from high school throughout college by her family and friends, Katie ultimately has to choose recovery for herself. Her feelings of inadequacy are squashed by self-control and dedication – to her schoolwork, her appearance, and starving her body to the right shape. Everything around her is changing so rapidly, and Katie feels she has to be perfect in everything. She is bullied, and she binges when she comes home upset. Her relationship with food grows worse as she enters high school. Soon she developed a ritual for herself, where everything had to be cut the same size, chewed a certain number of times… her parents showed no concern, as lots of children develop their own way of doing things. Katie always had a difficult relationship with food, even when she was a little girl. With a collection of kosher recipes from all regions of Italy, including plenty of vegan and vegetarian options, author Benedetta Jasmine Guetta is on a mission to share for a new generation how the Jews changed Italian food, preserving those recipes and sharing them with the world. WHEN I FIRST TOLD people that I was working on a book based on my experiences and perspectives as a transsexual woman, many of them immediately assumed that I was writing an autobiography (rather than a political or historical account, a work of fiction, or a collection of personal essays). In addition to debunking popular misconceptions about being transgender, Serano makes the case that today's feminists and transgender activists must work to embrace and empower femininity-in all of its wondrous forms. In this provocative manifesto, she exposes how deep-rooted the cultural belief is that femininity is frivolous, weak, and passive. Serano's well-honed arguments and pioneering advocacy stem from her ability to bridge the gap between the often-disparate biological and social perspectives on gender. In Whipping Girl, biologist and trans activist Julia Serano shares her experiences and insights-both pre- and post-transition-to reveal the ways in which fear, suspicion, and dismissiveness toward femininity shape our attitudes toward trans women, as well as gender and sexuality as a whole. *Named as one of 100 Best Non-Fiction Books of All Time by Ms. This classic manifesto is “a foundational text for anyone hoping to understand transgender politics and culture in the U.S. Agent: Joshua Bilmes, JABberwocky Literary. There is less tangible tension around whether the demon will be imprisoned by the Halloween love ritual than in the question of whom Fiji will choose to perform it with her. At the same time, she is tangled up with a woman who is being spied on by her wealthy family and their local agents. Fiji Cavanaugh, proprietor of Midnight’s magical shop, finds herself discarding notions of romance with the owner of the local pawnshop as well as receiving advances from the trapped demon. The locals include weretigers, fallen angels, mercenaries with father issues, and a witch with a broken heart. The small, strange town of Midnight, Tex., comes complete with its own demon, whose presence is triggering suicides. Bestseller Harris (the Sookie Stackhouse books) brings a real sense of community to the characters she introduced in Midnight Crossroad and Day Shift, deepening the reader’s connection to an irresistible assortment of phone psychics and cowpunching vampires. One of the things I really liked about this book was the pacing. If you're offended by drawn out bedroom scenes every 100 pages or so, this one's not for you. I was looking for another Black Dagger Brotherhood or Rachel Morgan-type series, and that's exactly what I got-the perfect thing to tide me over until next year when the next installments in those two series come out! If you're a fan of Kim Harrison, Vampire Academy, or the Black Dagger Brotherhood, you'll love Halfway to the Grave. The plot was more layered and intense than I was expecting, which was nice, and I liked Bones more than I thought I would. She reminds me a lot of Rose from Vampire Academy, and also Rachel Morgan from Dead Witch Walking. Cat is tough, cocky and stubborn, with a "take no prisoners" attitude. Thank you, The Book Vixen for recommending this series to me! Halfway to the Grave is the first in the Night Huntress series, starring Cat, a half-vampire, half-human who hunts and kills vampires in her spare time as retribution for the vampire who raped her mother. I think my favorite character is Wes, throughout the book he was very thoughtful of Liz and you can tell he truly cares about her. I think it was easy to get attached to the characters since they all had such engaging personalities. But I do think the characters were written really well and with a lot of substance. I think this book had a good concept but it was definitely predictable and wasn’t something that was unheard of. They don’t get along very well but when their old childhood friend, Michael, moves back into town, Liz asks Wes to set them up. This book is about a teenage girl Liz and her neighbor and childhood friend, Wes. ‘Better Than the Movies’ is a book written by Lynn Painter that was published in 2021. |
